Commissioner Albert Turner, Jr was born on the 14th day of January, to the late civil rights activist, Albert Turner, Sr. and his wife Evelyn H. Turner. Commission Turner is the youngest of four children born to his parents having two older brothers and an older sister.
Commissioner Turner was educated in the public schools of Perry County, Alabama before matriculating through Miles College of Birmingham earning a B.S. degree in Political Science with a minor in Public Administration. Commissioner Turner furthered his education by earning a JD Degree from the Thurgood Marshall School of Law in Houston, Texas in 1989.
Commissioner Turner first entered the political arena in 1983 as a student coordinator for the George McMillan for Governor Campaign. An undergraduate student himself, Turner made life long friendships with many powerful Alabama political leaders. An understudy of his father the late Albert Turner, Sr, Commissioner Turner moved rapidly through Alabama politics as Assistant Legislative Director for the office of Alabama’s Lt. Governor, Community and Public Affairs Director for the office of President Pro Tem and as Assistant Director for the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs (ADECA).
Commissioner Albert Turner, Jr was first appointed to serve in 2000 as a commissioner to serve the remainder of his father’s fourth term of office after the death of Albert Sr. Turner since have won two full six year terms on the Perry County Commission without been forced into a run-off election. In his twelve plus years on the Perry County Commission, Commissioner Turner has held the position of Vice Chairman of the Commission and Chairmanships of several committees during his tenure.
Currently, Commissioner Turner is serving his third term as Commissioner. Commissioner Turner is the active President and CEO of the Emerson Company, a political consulting and Lobbying firm with offices in Montgomery and Marion, Alabama. He also serves as the President of the Perry County Civic League, one of the most influential political organizations in West Alabama. Commissioner Turner is also, the immediate past President of the Alabama Association of Black County Officials.
